Navigating the Global Maize Landscape

Since its domestication nearly 9,000 years ago, maize, or corn, has grown to become a cornerstone of global agri-food systems. Its production has skyrocketed in recent decades, fueled by rising demand, technological advancements, and a combination of yield increases and area expansion. Today, maize stands as the leading cereal in terms of production volume and is on track to become the most widely grown and traded crop in the coming decade.

Corn plays a significant role in Pakistan's agriculture and economy. It is a preferred crop due to its good returns relative to other crops, particularly cotton and sugar cane. The use of imported U.S. seed corn continues to drive higher yields.

The main drivers affecting corn production and trade in Pakistan include the growing demand for corn in poultry feed rations and the expanding dairy sector. Poultry feed accounts for about 65 percent of corn use, while wet milling and dairy feed comprise about 15 and 10 percent, respectively.

Pakistan: A Rising Star on the Global Stage

In recent years, Pakistan has emerged as a significant player in the global maize market. The country's corn production has seen a steady increase, driven by factors such as the adoption of imported U.S. seed corn and favorable returns compared to other crops. This growth in production has led to an increase in Pakistan's exportable surplus of corn.

n 2022, a significant shift occurred in the global maize market. The reduced maize production in Ukraine and the United States created a gap that was partially filled by yellow maize from Pakistan. This development had a profound impact on several markets, particularly Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, and the Middle East.

In the marketing year 2023/24, Pakistan's corn exports are projected to reach 400,000 tons, marking a significant contribution to the global maize trade. This increase in exports is primarily driven by the growing output and the resulting exportable surplus.

However, the rise in exports has sparked a debate within the country. The poultry sector, which accounts for about 65 percent of corn use in Pakistan, is lobbying for the government to curb corn exports to ensure a stable domestic supply. On the other hand, the Cereal Association of Pakistan is advocating against restrictions on corn exports, highlighting the potential benefits of increased trade.

Despite these debates, the trend of growing corn exports from Pakistan presents a promising outlook for the country's role in the global maize market. As Pakistan continues to increase its corn production, it is poised to become an even more significant player in the global corn trade.

Record High maize production in

2023/24 Global Coarse Grain Outlook

The global coarse grain outlook for 2023/24 is set to break records in terms of production and use, leading to larger ending stocks. World corn production is forecast to reach an all-time high, driven by substantial increases in the United States, Argentina, the EU, China, and Serbia. However, this growth is somewhat offset by projected smaller crops in Ukraine and Brazil.

Increase in Global Corn Consumption

Alongside record production, world corn use is also expected to rise by approximately 4 percent. This increase is mirrored in foreign consumption, indicating a global trend of growing corn utilization.

The Challenge and Opportunity in Export Markets

Despite the challenges in production, opportunities are emerging in the export markets. U.S. corn exports, for instance, are expected to see a slight increase in market share, although they will likely remain below the average of the past five years. Conversely, Ukraine's exports are projected to decline due to lower production prospects.

Detailed Forecast for World Corn Production and Consumption

World corn production is set to reach record highs, with the largest increases projected for the United States, Argentina, the EU, China, and Serbia. This growth is somewhat offset by smaller crops expected in Ukraine and Brazil. With lower prices, world corn imports are forecast to grow by just over 5 percent, driven by increases for several countries, including China, Egypt, Vietnam, Algeria, Mexico, and Colombia. However, reductions are expected for the EU and Turkey.

China's Coarse Grain Imports Forecast

For China, total coarse grain imports for 2023/24 are forecast at 38.4 million tons, up 7.2 million from a year ago but below the record 50.5 million reached during 2020/21. Despite this increase, China's internal market prices for energy feedstuffs are expected to remain higher than the world market. Corn imports are expected to rise by 5.0 million tons to 23.0 million, supported by imports from three major exporting countries: the United States, Brazil, and Ukraine.
